2008 Reserve Syrah-91 Points: “Spacious style lets its blackberry and black cherry flavors expand nicely against streaks of mineral and pepper, coming together smoothly on the ripe but contained finish.  Drink now through 2015.  150 cases made.” – HS

We just learned that the editors at Wine Enthusiast rated and reviewed our 2008 Reserve Syrah and awared it 92 points. Only a selection of their reviews appear in print, but beginning August 1, you can look for it at WineMag.com.

In her follow report on Hospice du Rhône titled “An extravaganza of Rhônes,” Laurie Daniel at the San Jose Mercury News wrote that our first Reserve “is plump and lively, with flavors of blackberry, blueberry, a note of roasted coffee and firm structure.”

We were delighted to discover that Cowhorn was featured in one of the first editions of Uncorked, a new iPad magazine published by Nomad Editions.  We love our iPads and use them for both business and pleasure.  The striking thing about Nomad magazines is that they’re published for tablet computers, not adapted from print publications.  So they’re the right size and design for a great iPad experience.  Yet they’re written like the best magazines – the CEO of the company is Mark Edmiston, a former editor of Newsweek.  You can find Nomad at nomadeditions.com and download the iPad app in the App Store in iTunes.

Sunset magazine just notified us that three of our wines have been nominated for the annual Sunset Western Wine Awards. Our Viognier and Spiral in the Good Value category and our 2008 Reserve in the Special Occasion category.

The Sunset Western Wine Awards are recognized as one of the highest honors for Western winemakers and focus solely on wines produced in the West. Judging to start mid June. We will keep you posted.

Cowhorn 2008 Reserve Syrah (Applegate Valley)
Wine Enthusiast Rating: 92

Price: $45/750 ml
Designation: Reserve
Varietal: Syrah, Shiraz/Syrah
Appellation: Applegate Valley, Southern Oregon, Oregon, US
Producer: Cowhorn
Case Production: 150
Bottle Size: 750 ml
Category: Red

Notes: A selection of prime, biodynamically farmed blocks from the estate vineyard, this Cowhorn reserve is elegant, detailed, rich and thoroughly captivating. Black cherry fruit is set in loamy earth flavors, soft and broadly displayed across the palate. Ripe without being in any way over the top, it brings in details of black tea, citrus, sandalwood and mocha. A complex wine of great finesse. P.G. (8/1/2011) — 92

We’d like to thank SilverKing in the CellarTracker Community for a 94 rating and beautiful review of our 2008 Syrah 74. Here’s what the king had to say on the subject…

The Cowhorn Syrah from 2007 was my favorite Syrah from that vintage in Southern Oregon. The 2008 Syrah 74, (74 for the number of days of frost at the vineyard), may eclipse that. I tasted this right after it was released last year and I think it has improved since then. This bottle was at room temperature and allowed to breath for 30 minutes before tasting.

The wine is a deep dark purple, light barely filters through it is so dense. The nose is effusive, earthy and dark berry fruit, roasted meats , tobacco and cedar. This nose reminds me of a well aged Cote-Rotie, something hard achieve this far from the Rhone. The palette is a sweet blast of fruit, raspberry and strawberry with a great acidic, tannic finish. The wine is in perfect balance it will be in harmony by itself or with any rich food . It will even get better with more bottle age, but I doubt if I can wait that long. 94, buy it before its gone.

Cowhorn 2008 Syrah 74 (Applegate Valley)
Wine Enthusiast Rating: 91

Price: $35/750 ml
Designation: Syrah 74
Varietal: Syrah, Shiraz/Syrah
Appellation: Applegate Valley, Southern Oregon, Oregon, US
Producer: Cowhorn
Case Production: 75
Bottle Size: 750 ml
Category: Red

Notes: Cowhorn wines are certified biodynamic and entirely natural. This stunning Syrah is inky black, and smells like a bowl of blueberries and blackberries. Threaded through those delicious berry flavors are composty highlights of earth and leaf. Beautifully balanced and intriguing; this is as good as any Oregon Syrah I’ve ever tasted. P.G.
