How great to discover balance like this is an American Syrah! Jeff Weissler & owner/winemaker Bill Steele chat on the ’08.

2006 Michel-Schlumberger Syrah La Source
Some wines just grab you and won’t let go. Michel Schlumberger’s Syrah ‘La Source’ is one of those wines. Jeff Weissler & winemaker Mike Brunson talk about his Syrah.

Jeff Weissler and Co-owner & winemaker Bill Steele sat down to taste & talk about their ’07 Syrah. The vines for this wine were first planted in 2005 and put this wine to the test by trying it after it had been opened for 2 full days.
I pulled the corks on 2 Dominio IV wines the same day and tried them side by side. They were both tight (expected with natural wine), and I immediately wanted to know how they would open up with some air.
The 2006 Tempranillo was the tighter of the 2, showing oak and not a lot of fruit or seduction.
The 2006 Syrah showed a beautiful texture but the flavors were not yet ready to bloom.
They were opened at Ambyth Estate, outside of Paso Robles, CA and 4 of us tasted them that day. I was a 12 hour drive from home, and filled with intentions to try these wines again each of the next 2 days. Then came reality.
5 days after opening, it was time for fellow wine lover, Beverly McKenzie and I to take another taste…

I was traveling California’s Highway 101 South, past Paso Robles to Templeton, then another 5 or 6 windy miles to the gate of Ambyth Estate.
Before too long, owner/winemaker Phillip Hart and myself had our palates ready to go, and the audio recorder turned on.

While visiting Cowhorn Vineyards, in Southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley, Bill Steele and I sat down and tasted their wines. All are from biodynamically farmed grapes, and from 100% estate fruit.
