Our Scoring System

As a buyer for a large wine shop in the NY area, I needed a way to decide if the wine I was considering purchasing for the store was a good buy for the consumer I wanted to sell it to… and whether the odds were good that they would come back, and buy it a second time.

In my early days of school 65 was a passing grade, 70 worthy of an exhale, 80 meant competent, 90 was ask the parents for something I’d been wanting, …

With that In mind I created the following as a 10-point scoring system to evaluate wine.

I will be using this scale to let you know what rocks and what’s rocky as I share my thoughts and ramblings on the wide wide world of wine.

The ConsciousWine 10 Point Scoring System

10. I like it so much that I’ll tell no one & hoard as much as I can for myself.

9. I like it enough to tell my friends about it.

8. I took it home and enjoyed it enough to buy more.

7. At its present retail price, having tasted it, I like it enough to buy a bottle.

6. I truly like things about this wine, but not enough to buy it at its retail price.

5. Neutral. Neither here nor there. Didn’t leave much of an impression.

4. It’s in front of me, and I ordered it, so I’ll drink it… at least some.

3. I ain’t so sure I’m going back for another sip.

2. I’ll hide it behind the water glass so I don’t drink anymore by mistake.

1. Oh Waiter!

Watch for the numbers when wines are reviewed, and remember that a 7 or betterĀ is what you’re looking for!
