The Morning After

Friday, June 10, 2011 by Jeff Weissler

On “the morning after,” at Tazza Cafe, Megan and I settled in for some rehab at a Somers, NY caffeination station pit stop. Within minutes we were chatting to discover the location of an excellent cannoli. We’d heard rumors of some locally the previous night, while consuming the ends of the dessert plate.

We moved to seats outside when one particular gentleman, on his way to his car, paused to share a few words. We spoke of foods we craved yet seldom saw. He popped out with, “I’d die for a good Jewish deli, specifically for a pastrami on rye”.

This is a common occurrence for those born in New York City, exposed to and experienced with many of the city’s ethnic culinary options, who moves anywhere beyond a few miles of the city limits. By the way, New Yorkers and specifically Jewish New Yorkers (this one at least) are prone to extraordinary and regular bouts of extreme exaggeration in thoughts, feelings, and actions.

I currently live in Ashland, OR and my frustration with not having New York-style pizza in my life led to learning how to roll some dough, make some sauce, and to purchasing a pizza stone… pizza!

Sitting in an Italian restaurant last week in North Bergen, NY while enjoying a salad and pizza, my brain exhaled 914-961-3175. I pulled out my phone, dialed, and I heard… Roma’s! Life was good as I had been reunited with a very large smile… and a date at a pizzeria in Tuckahoe, NY my family had gone to for over thirty years. This was a requirement before I hopped on a plane to go back West.  I have long been pre-occupied with all pizza for all time being compared to Roma’s. Such is the path of ingrained tradition amped up with some caffeine and a history including New York pizza, cannolis, and a good knish!

So that’s what happened the morning after the ConsciousWine launch party. It was a fun, happening event at my business partner, Vinny Liscio’s, home… But that’s another story soon to be told…
