The Conscious Wineries

by Jeffrey Weissler

ConsciousWine is here because sustainable, organic practices and well made wine can and do exist in the same bottle!

This is our version of re-framing the use of the word organic in the fine wine world to help you choose vital, delicious, interesting, consistently well made wines.

All these wineries adhere to the 4 Principles of ConsciousWine:

1. Organically Grown Grapes
2. Sustainably Farmed
3. Creating Vital Products
4. That Taste Great!

They are on “The List” because they have earned it! They do not pay to be included. They are stewards of that which they farm. They have chosen to do so in an organic and sustainable way, and produce wines that make us smile… a lot!

Extra Note: This is an ever changing list. We check out wineries continually to see if they adhere to our criteria. Wineries will be added to and come off our list based on how they farm and the wine that ends up in the bottle. We’ve started with wines & wineries from the West Coast of the US. Our list will expand as time goes on.

Let us know any wineries you think meet our criteria and we’ll be sure to comment back to you and check them out.

Cheers!

Interesting Note…

by Jeffrey Weissler

We support becoming aware of what each of us can do individually and collectively to minimize the overall footprint of our choices.

There are many viewpoints on what’s sustainable and on what qualifies as an holistic approach.

Having said that, the roots of America’s wine industry came from the other side of the Atlantic. Preferred wine barrels come mostly from France, followed by Slovenia (although American oak is also finding its place). Corks come from Portugal. Lots of wine bottle glass comes from France.

The indigenous home of most of America’s grape varietals, farming for a sense of place (or terroir), and the magic of pairing wine and food are gifts from France’s (and a few of their neighbors) history and tradition. They offer so much as to be inspirational teachers and guides for many a winemaker, grape grower and consumer.

So, to support just local from a wine point of view, is an interesting inquiry. For right now, ConsciousWine is focused on the United States’ West Coast, but we’ll infuse the world of wine into our blog.
